Skydiving is an exciting pastime, whether it's something you only do once for a special occasion, or an option you take every chance you get. Either way, there's a specific timeframe during the year when you can skydive, and times when it's not such a good idea. If you don't realize that, though, you might show up all excited to jump out of a plane, only to find out the weather won't let you.
So when is skydiving season? Generally, skydiving season is from April to October each year, weather permitting. That might seem like a short time to pack in all the jumps you want to make, but there are a couple of really good reasons why you can't just skydive anytime of the year you want. Here's what you need to know, about safety, weather concerns, and skydiving season.
Generally, skydiving season starts around April 15th every year. It could vary a little bit, especially if it's unusually warm, or if the coolness of winter lingers longer than normal. But generally, mid-April is when the weather is warm enough to start flying and jumping.
Otherwise, it's too cold at high altitude, and it's not safe to jump. Skydiving season lasts until the middle of October, most years. Sometimes it lasts a couple of weeks longer, and there are years when it gets cut a bit short.
It really is very weather-dependent, because colder temperatures quickly cause problems that make jumping from an airplane unsafe. Sometimes it's not possible to jump, even at the height of skydiving season, because of cloudy or rainy weather. But that really doesn't affect CSC very often. The temperatures are the biggest concern.
We know you're excited to skydive, but we also want you to remember that you might not be able to jump on a day when you'd really like to, even during the typical season for skydiving. Safety is more important, and has to be the focus of everything we do.
But we'll always do our best to make sure you can jump on the day and time you're scheduled, so you don't miss out on the experience.
The biggest, busiest part of the skydiving season is between May and September. That's when the majority of people plan their jumps, because the weather's warm, and it's not likely to be too rainy.
If you're planning on coming to CSC, and you're cutting it close by trying to jump in early April or late October, keep in mind it may not be possible for you to safely jump at that time. If you can jump closer to the middle of the typical skydiving season, you'll have a lower risk of a canceled jump.
It's easy to understand why you might want to jump in the winter months, and experience seeing that beautiful blanket of snow from way up in the air. Or maybe you want to jump just a little earlier or later in the year, on a date that marks a milestone or a special occasion.
We completely get it! But the temperature at ground level isn't the same as it is at jumping altitude. It's cold up high in the air, and when you head to a higher altitude it can quickly become far too chilly for you to safely be exposed to the air.
You could end up with frostbite, or even get to the point where you couldn't breathe. At CSC, staying safe is much more important than anything else.
That's why jumping during the winter months isn't realistic, because it's not worth your health and safety. If your birthday is in December, for example, skydiving on that date isn't something you should plan for.
Jumping in the summer, though? That's a blast!
