The reasons are as varied as the people. Some choose to jump for the thrill of it. Some choose to jump for the freedom that it allows. Some partake as part of a community and have goals larger than themselves. For many, jumping is a form of personal therapy and growth or it’s a new way to challenge themselves mentally and physically. There are simply too many incredible reasons to skydive!
For most people, it starts out the same way. Doing a tandem skydiving suddenly broadens their perspective. It’s an unimaginable rush and is either an individual’s attempt to overcome fear, check off a bucket-list item, or sometimes it even to make good on a dare. But for those that continue on in the sport, it becomes something much deeper and more meaningful than a one-time thrill.
1. The excitement
Skydiving is, without a doubt, one of the most incredible sensations ever. It has become the most accessible “extreme sport” offering excitement and adrenaline, incredible views, and sensations that can be found in no other arena. It has attracted thrill seekers for decades and is the only extreme sport that allows a first-time jumper to experience exactly what the pros do.
2. The accomplishment
Skydiving is a bucket-list item for certain, but it can be so much more. It offers something that most people will rarely, if ever, experience in their lives, a true living-in-the-moment experience. For the 60 seconds you’re in freefall and for the 4 - 5 minutes you’re under the parachute, literally, nothing else matters. Everything in life simply fades to the background and even well after the jump is done life simply seems to have the volume turned down. An experience you have to have to understand fully.
3. The People
As you get deeper into the sport, you’ll find that it is just as much the community that brings you back to the drop zone time after time as it is the jumps. It’s the amazing variety of wonderful individuals, from a multitude of backgrounds, professions, and countries. What most of them have in common is an infectiously happy attitude that will make a drop zone busy even on a rainy day because most jumpers are just as happy to hang out with everyone as they are to jump.
4. The Attitude
To put it bluntly, skydivers are just cool. Finding out someone is a skydiver instantly changes your opinion of them because it tells you without a doubt that they have a certain level of confidence and strength to overcome fear. It has done the exact same thing for them in regard to their opinion of themselves, instilling a level of confidence in their ability to overcome obstacles, deal with stressful situations, problem-solve and work within a group and community. It helps to increase confidence and boost assertiveness which helps in literally every aspect of life.
5. Because it's fun and fun is good!
So whether it’s a once-in-a-lifetime jump or a lifetime of jumping, skydiving has the incredible ability to change your perspective and outlook in a positive way. Above all else, it teaches those who partake that we are never done learning, that community is key, and that life is about living to the fullest.
